MSDF Organizes "Journey to the Light" for World White Cane Day
In observance of World White Cane Day, which falls on October 15 of each year, the Ministry of Social Development and Family (MSDF)—represented by the Community Care Department and in cooperation with the Al Noor Center for the Blind—is organizing an educational student trip titled "Journey to the Light" on October 8, 2026, at Gewan Island. The event features the participation of 50 preparatory-school students representing five government schools, with 10 students from each school.
The initiative aims to enhance students' awareness of the rights of persons with visual disabilities, introduce the importance of the white cane as an essential tool for safe mobility and a symbol of independence and self-reliance, and instill values of acceptance, respect, and social inclusion. It also seeks to develop students' social responsibility and foster positive, conscious interactions with individuals with visual disabilities.
The program includes interactive activities and experiences simulating daily challenges faced by persons with visual disabilities. This helps familiarize students with proper methods of interacting with white cane users, raises awareness of the importance of supporting them, and encourages active participation in supportive community initiatives.
Additionally, the Al Noor Center for the Blind will be honored in recognition of its efforts to rehabilitate and empower individuals with visual disabilities and its cooperation in hosting the trip. Souvenir gifts will also be distributed to participants, alongside certificates of appreciation for the participating entities.
The "Journey to the Light" initiative reflects the keenness of MSDF to promote awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities, cement the values of inclusion and social responsibility, and contribute to building a more inclusive, accepting, and equal-opportunity society.
